What is the value of podcasting in your view? (Audio / Video)
Podcasting is a distribution channel, and a convenient way to keep subscribers up-to-date with the latest and greatest, by means of the RSS feed. The host is easily able to notify the subscribers when there is new content available, by means of downloading straight to their computer, or for mobile use. In terms of usage, subscription is easy and by means of iTunes, for example, downloading is also simplified with its automation functionality. As this is a web-based delivery, the content can pretty much be accessed anywhere.
I would have to say that once the content has been downloaded, it plays quite well. However, I am a strong believer in first considering who the audience is, before creating the content. Content re-use can also be a benefit, but only if it can be chopped down to more digestible bites of information. Three to seven minutes is just great – if there is more to say, it should be intelligently split up into smaller segments.
I see podcasting as a competitive advantage for anyone wanting to relay their message to broader audiences. Technology is continuing to re-enforce the availability of podcasting as a distribution channel, and I wouldn’t be too surprised if we wouldn’t be able to access the content through others mediums in the near future – i.e. automobile interfacing, television, satellite, etc.
